Seasonal (Spring) Eye Disease Prevention

Seasonal (Spring) Eye Disease Prevention

By Ms. Jiwon Lee, School Nurse

Eye diseases usually occur during summer but can also occur during spring due to yellow dust, etc.

Allergic Conjunctivitis

Pollen or yellow dust are the main causes. When you get allergic conjunctivitis, your eyes become red and itch severely. In extreme cases, the surrounding of your eyes may swell, but it is not contagious.

Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis

It generally occurs after 7~10 days since the virus enters into your eyes. Once you are infected, it takes 2~3 weeks to recover, which is the longest duration of treatment and is strongly contagious.

Prevention and Treatment

1. Do not rub your eyes and wash your hands immediately after you come from outside.

2. If a family member has an eye disease, use individual toiletries.

3. You may get infected when using public wipes that are unclean on your eyes, due to various germs.

4. If the symptoms are severe, see an ophthalmologist.
