Admissions
Like other Korean schools, at HIS the school year starts in Spring (March). If applicants have graduated from or are transferring from schools that start in Fall, the grade they join will be determined based on the amount of schooling completed and the time of admission.
Each class has a capacity of 20 students. Elementary school has one class per grade, middle school has two classes per grade, and high school has three classes per grade.
In Korea, ‘regular admissions’ refers to students entering the first year of elementary school (1st grade), middle school (7th grade), or high school (10th grade). Admissions for all other grades are referred to as ‘transfer admissions’.

Each year there are 20 new openings for 1st grade, 7th grade, and 10th grade. For other grades, availability depends on the number of vacancies that year. We do not accept transfer admissions for 12th grade.
Unlike conventional admissions, students are not selected on a rolling admission. Students are admitted after an evaluation process including an interview and entrance exam. See more information here.
There is a written exam and interview

HIS does not accept donations as a prerequisite for admission, and a donation is not required upon admission. However, as we do not receive government funding, any donations are welcome and appreciated.
The admissions information day is an annual event held at Saturday during mid August~start of September.
If you wish to visit the school, please contact the school prior to the visitation and make a reservation. Please note that during our general/transfer admissions period our office may be less available for consultation.
Students will be assigned to a year/grade level based on their date of birth, the system of education in the relevant country, their period of study (domestic and abroad), and their current grade. When requesting a consultation, please give us the above information so we can assist you.
There are scholarships available for the children of Handong Global University Foundation faculty and employees and for the children of missionaries, which are given at the discretion of financial donors.
Our school is called Handong International School in English. In Korean, the name has been changed to 한동글로벌학교 (Handong Global School) following our accreditation as an alternative school by the Office of Education in 2011.
HIS is a certified alternative school under the category of “Various Schools” (Elementary/Middle Grade Education Law, paragraph 8 and Elementary/Middle Grade Education Law, article 60, paragraph 3). As an alternative school, HIS has an extent of autonomy in school operations such as in curriculum, hiring, student records, grade level system, and textbooks.
Yes. Although the school is legally different from Korean public schools, all academic credentials in elementary, middle, and high school are academically recognized.
Yes, it is possible. In high school, transfer to another school may depend on the other school’s admission policies and requirements.
College entrance is roughly divided into domestic universities and foreign universities. Due to our school’s system of education, HIS students generally apply to domestic universities through early admissions (school records, interviews) rather than regular college admissions (taking the KSAT). Each university has different early admissions policies, so students will need to prepare their foreign language grades, school records, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, etc. accordingly. Foreign university entrance usually requires TOEFL, SAT/ACT scores, student transcripts, teacher recommendations, and personal essays.
You can see a list of universities students have been accepted to for the last three years here
HIS and Handong Global University (HGU) are both under the same foundation and HIS is located on the HGU campus. However, legally HIS and HGU are separate educational institutions. Therefore, attending HIS has no particular advantages in the admission process. To enter HGU, the student must satisfy the university’s admissions requirements. You can see the rate of acceptance of HIS students to HGU at the link above.
Generally, about 65% of elementary classes, 45-80% of middle school classes, and 20-80% of high school classes are taught in English. (In middle and high school, percentages vary depending on the elective courses the students take.)
(Elementary School) The purpose of clubs in Elementary School is to help children discover and develop their God-given talents. Club offerings may vary between semesters.
(Middle/High School) Clubs are divided into regular clubs and student-led clubs. Regular clubs take place every Wednesday during 7th period. Student-led clubs take place after school at various times depending on the students. Clubs are largely divided into three groups: Culture & Arts, Sports, and Academics. HIS encourages active participation in various clubs and gives students many opportunities to participate in school events as well as sports competitions through club activities.
Please see the Co-curricular Activities page for more details.
HIS does not independently operate school buses. However, the 302 city bus stops at the Handong University campus. For more information regarding the 302 bus route, please see the Pohang City Hall website. You can also track the bus route and schedule on the Kakao Bus app. (Bus route call center: 054-281-8272)
Missionary kids in middle and high school (grades 7-12) or regular students in grades 9-12 are eligible to board in the dormitories. Regular students in grades 7 or 8 may board only if there is available space in the dormitory.
During Summer/Winter vacation, Chuseok holiday, and school holidays, the dormitories are closed. Students whose parents live overseas must prepare a place to stay during these times.
There are up to 4 students per room. Each room is furnished with bunk beds, personal closets, and study desks, while living areas, toilets and showers are shared communally.
Students are permitted to go off campus during the day or overnight on the weekends, but not during the week. Day outings and overnight trips are only allowed with signed permission and verbal confirmation from the parent(s). For day trips students must return to the dorms by 5 pm. On overnight trips students must return by 6 pm the day before classes resume. Day outings are limited to holidays and Saturdays: going out on a day trip is not allowed on Sunday except for situations with extenuating circumstances.
HIS students can wear a uniform or casual clothing. The uniform consists of a collared t-shirt with the HIS logo during the summer, and long-sleeved shirt and hoodie during the winter. Students should wear the uniform during chapel, school ceremonies (e.g. opening and closing ceremonies), or other community events. Otherwise, students are free to wear casual clothing that does not defy school regulations.
